The San Diego Padres have acquired LHP Tanner Scott and RHP Bryan Hoeing from the Miami Marlins in exchange for LHP Robby Snelling, RHP Adam Mazur, and INF's Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

The Padres had a big trade deadline, sending 3 of their 5 best prospects to the Marlins to complete this trade, landing Scott and Hoeing from the Marlins. The package is a steep price for the Padres, as Hoeing is under contract beyond this year, but Scott will be a free agent after this season. Scott is the second big bullpen pickup by the Padres, who also got Jason Adam from the Rays.

Scott is in the midst of a dominant season with the Marlins, his 3rd year with the team. He has a 1.18 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 3.25 FIP, averaging over 5 walks per inning and 10.4 strikeouts per 9, picking up 18 saves in 44 appearances, tossing 45 2/3 innings.

San Diego GM AJ Preller said of adding to the bullpen "There are a lot of ways you can go about building championship teams and rosters and pitching staffs. Historically, you just need some guys that can get outs with big-time hitters. If that’s as a starter for seven innings, that’s extremely valuable. But having a group that hopefully shortens the game, we’ve seen some teams win championships that way."

With the acquisition of Scott, the Padres now have one of the best bullpens in baseball. Robert Suarez is the team's closer with a 23 save season to date, with Scott and Adam joining breakout reliever Jeremiah Estrada as the setup men to Suarez.

Hoeing is the other piece going to the Padres, as he can provide depth in both the starting and relief pitching pools for the Padres. He has a 2.70 ERA, 3.26 FIP, and 1.27 WHIP, averaging 0.6 home runs allowed per 9, 2.7 walks per 9, and 7.5 strikeouts per 9 over 30 innings pitched, making two starts and 14 relief appearances for the Marlins.

One piece going to the Marlins is Snelling, the Padres' second best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He has a 6.01 ERA and 1.68 WHIP, averaging 4.1 walks per 9 and 8.2 strikeouts per 9 innings in 73 1/3 innings, making 16 starts for Double A San Antonio.

Mazur comes to the Marlins as the Padres 4th ranked prospect. He's allowed 28 runs on 40 hits and 21 walks in 33 2/3 innings over 8 starts in the majors this season, his rookie year. In the minor leagues this year, he has a 4.39 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, averaging 8.8 strikeouts per 9 over 55 1/3 innings across 11 starts.

Like Mazur, Pauley also made his big league debut this season. Of the 4 hits he has, two of them are home runs over 32 plate appearances across 13 games. With Triple A El Paso this season, he has a .228/.342/.390 slash line with 8 home runs, 15 doubles, and 41 RBI's in 70 games.

Beshears is the only prospect in this deal that isn't included in the Padres' top 5 prospect list. Ranked 24th overall, he has a .261/.373/.377 slash line with a .750 OPS, hitting 24 doubles and 4 home runs with 30 RBI's in 85 games, split between Low A Lake Elsinore and High A Fort Wayne.

The Marlins have traded away Scott, Hoeing, Bryan De La Cruz, JT Chargois, Jazz Chisholm Jr, Josh Bell, Huascar Brazoban, AJ Puk, and Trevor Rogers in a very busy trade deadline. The Padres brought in Martin Perez alongside Scott, Hoeing, and Adam as they load up for a playoff push.
