Matt Vierling homered and drove in a pair of runs, Dillon Dingler had an identical performance, and the Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants with a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon in San Francisco.

Both Vierling and Dingler homered and drove in two runs as the Tigers snapped a 3 game losing streak, salvaging the final game of the series against the Giants in the process. They handed the Giants just their 3rd loss in 10 games in the process, improving to 56-63 with the win.

Vierling gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning by hitting a solo home run, his 14th longball of the season. Matt Chapman gave the Giants a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning with a two run single to center field. In the second inning, Dingler hit his first career major league home run, a two run shot to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

In the 5th inning, Vierling doubled in Dingler with his 20th double of the season to make it a 4-2 Tigers lead. Vierling then scored on a single to right field by Colt Keith to make it 5-2. In the 6th inning, an RBI single by Chapman cut the Giants deficit to 5-3 before scoring on an RBI double by Jerar Encarnacion to make it a 5-4 game.

Dingler said of his first home run "It was cool. It was very cool. Contact, pushing the ball forward, was cool at the base level. I kind of noticed how they were attacking me early, a lot of backdoor stuff with sinkers. So I figured that I was just going to get some four-seamers away, the first couple ABs especially. I kind of took advantage of it."

Keider Montero got the start for the Tigers, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. Tyler Holton pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Brenan Hanifee added 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Will Vest picked up his first save of the season with a shutout 9th inning.

Hayden Birdsong allowed 5 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings, getting tagged with the loss. Erik Miller added one scoreless inning and Sean Hjelle pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Taylor Rogers and Jordan Hicks each threw a shutout inning each.

Asked about his start, Birdsong said "A little better on fastball command, I would say. I got it down in the zone when I needed to, not all the time. The home runs were good swings, too much of the plate. It’s how baseball goes. I’m not happy with it. A little disappointed, but that’s how it goes. I’ll be ready for the next one."

The Giants get back in action Monday night against the Atlanta Braves, with Blake Snell getting the series opening start. The Tigers have Monday off before starting a series with the Seattle Mariners Tuesday night, with Tarik Skubal lined up to get the start.
