Keibert Ruiz had a 3 hit game, Joey Gallo homered and drove in 3 runs, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins with a 6-2 victory Tuesday night in Miami.

Thanks to the homer by Gallo and the 3 hit day by Ruiz, the Nationals improved to 8-0 against the Marlins this season, a stark contrast from their 6-26 record against them the last two seasons. Ruiz fell just a triple shy of the cycle, driving the Nationals offense.

Washington manager Dave Martinez said of Ruiz that "For me, with him, it's about just being consistent. He's got to learn what he did today and focus on doing that tomorrow. You know, today he laid off a lot of balls down, cut the ball up. He's really good at hitting the balls up. If he could continue to do that, you know, he could swing the bat."

Jacob Young got the Nationals on the board in the 3rd inning, hitting a single to right field that scored Ruiz to make it 1-0. Gallo further padded the lead in the 4th for the Nationals, hitting a 3 run home run to center field. In the 5th, Connor Norby got the Marlins on the board with an RBI double that scored Nick Fortes.

Ruiz continued his strong day in the top of the 6th inning, hitting a solo home run to center field that made it 5-1 on his 13th longball of the season. Cristian Pache made it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double that scored David Hensley. Young scored in the 9th on a groundout by Andres Chaparro, making it a 6-2 game.

Getting the start for the Nationals was Patrick Corbin, who allowed two runs while striking out 8 hitters in 5 2/3 innings. Jose Ferrer handled the next 1 1/3 innings before Derek Law and Robert Garcia each threw a scoreless inning.

It was Max Meyer who started for the Marlins, allowing 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched, which set a new single season high for him in innings pitched and starts. George Soriano allowed one run in relief while Anthony Maldonado and Austin Kitchen had scoreless appearances.

Meyer said after setting a new innings total "I feel all right. I know everybody's going through some stuff right now. It's really hard to make it a full season. Just keep sticking with my weight training program and my arm care, and should be good."

Game two of the series is lined up for Wednesday night. MacKenzie Gore takes the mound for the Nationals as they try to secure the series win, while Valente Bellozo starts for the Marlins to try to even the series.
